See Main News section for details on Treecutting and Fireworks News Hard work gets Royal seal of approvalThree Norfolk yachtsmen and women featured prominently in this year's Royal Yachting Association volunteer awards, presented by The Princess Royal at the RYA annual meeting in London.
He introduced thousands of people of all ages to the sport through the hundreds of instructors he trained highly as a respected coach. He was instrumental in the development and adoption by clubs and training centres of RYA training schemes. He was an insructor with the National Schools Association and also Suffolk Watersports Association. Peggy Batchelor, who was also awarded an RYA Community Award for lifetime achievement, has been a lifelong member of Norfolk Broads Yacht Club (NBYC) and has contributed to the management of racing for almost 50 years, rarely missing a weekend throughout the season. She has been senior timekeeper at NBYC for more than 30 years, working to a remarkable level of accuracy. Peggy, from Hoveton, also regularly acts as a flag puller or recrorder. Together with her late husband she played a major role in the improvements to and maintenance of the standards of race management at the club.
Robert, from Yarmouth, first conceived the idea of attempting to develop an RYA approved training centre at HSC several years ago. Despite daunting obstacles of time, resources, practical help and lack of qualified training skills, he successfully turned the plans into action. He has put together a formidable team, recruited instructors and senior instructors, used the help of parents, purchased dinghies and acheived formal training status. Now in its third year, the youth training centre has attracted a host of new children and parents as club members. The RYA Awards and Community Awards acknowledge the importance of volunteers within the sailing and boating communities. They recognise the outstanding contributions, time, effort and experience individuals have made to making it possible for others to enjoy boating and sailing from establishing clubs, committee participation, through to boat maintenance and training. TREE/SCRUB CLEARANCE WORKING PARTIES Over the years the opening up of the marsh around the broad has had very positive results for sailing and wildlife. You might be surprised at the increase in bird and plant recovery. The winter program has started but we need additional help to assist with clearing and burning. We start at 09.30am on Saturdays, meeting at the sail shed. No special equipment is required but essentials are old warm clothes, good gloves and Wellingtons and a thermos of tea/coffee is advisable together with a packed lunch. Our planned dates for the season are as follows:- 3rd November 17th November 1st December 15th December 19th January 9th February 23rd February With many thanks for your time and commitment. Regards Peter Sabberton |
